The Hurricane Hills Sports Center held it's next to last race of
the 2006 season on October 8th. Mother Nature cooperated by
delivering a beautiful fall day complete with blue skies and
lots of sunshine. Track conditions were nearly perfect.
Chris Prenderville, Antonio Poccia and Barry Carsten led the
pack out of the second turn in the opening over 30 A class moto.
By the time the pack cleared the downhill triple, the top five
had changed considerably. Darren Edsall held the point followed
by Poccia, Prenderville, Joe Fritz Sr., and Darryl Smith. By the
midpoint of lap two, Edsall had opened up a four second lead.
Poccia and Prenderville held second and third. Carsten was on
the move after a poor start, first passing Fritz then Smith to
claim fourth. Smith and Fritz were relegated to fifth and sixth.
Carsten was still headed to the front and on lap three passed
Prenderville, securing third. Near the end of lap three, Carsten
secured second and began closing the gap on Edsall. Shortly
after the start of lap four, Carsten made the pass on the ski
jump on the back tree line taking the lead. Edsall was displaced
to runner-up. Carsten promptly pulled away and took the checkers
with a six second advantage. Edsall, Smith, Prenderville and
Poccia closed out the top five.
Fritz, Joe Reilly, Poccia and Smith led the start of the final
over 30 A moto. Fritz had a three second lead at the start of
lap two. Poccia, Prenderville and Edsall moved up to secure
second through fourth, which relegated Reilly to fifth. Smith
then caught and passed Reilly taking fifth. Reilly was displaced
to sixth. On lap three, Edsall made the pass on Prenderville
taking third. Prenderville dropped to fourth but it wasn't long
before a hard charging Carsten relegated him to fifth. Just
after the start of lap four, Edsall passed Poccia taking second.
Poccia dropped to third. Meanwhile Fritz continued to hold down
the point position but Edsall and Carsten were quickly coming
through the pack. About midway through lap four, Edsall and
Carsten got by Fritz taking first and second. Fritz was
relegated to third. Four turns from the start of lap five;
Carsten passed Edsall taking the lead. Edsall was displaced to
runner-up status again. Carsten got the win with a three second
cushion. Edsall, Fritz, Poccia and Josh Bozzuto closed out the
top five.
Carsten topped the podium with a perfect 1-1. Edsall's
consistent 2-2 finishes secured second and Poccia closed out the
podium with a 5-4 tally.
Nick McPhee, Marshall Hurd and Mark Rice led the start of the
first 250 B moto. McPhee had a three second gap on Hurd on lap
two. Rice, Paul Meier and Joe Fritz Jr. rounded out the top
five. McPhee had a five second lead by the end of lap two and
increased it to six seconds by the end of lap three. The top
five were all spread out by lap four. McPhee got the win
followed by Meier, Rice, DJ Mowery and Chris Murray.
McPhee, Hurd, Mowery, Meier and Murray led the start of the
final 250 B moto. McPhee had a three second advantage on lap two
and increased it to 8 seconds by the checkers. Hurd, Rice, Meier
and Fritz rounded out the top five.
McPhee (1-1) topped the podium. Rice (3-3) secured runner-up and
Meier (2-4) closed out the podium.
