24th Annual Santich Cycles Grand Prix of Motocross
By Jim P. Sanderson
CLIFFORD, PA, JULY 23, 2006
The Santich Cycles Grand Prix of Motocross, one of the most anticipated
events of the year, is held annually at Hurricane Hills and features an AMA
District six points race with all the usual classes but when the regular
race program concludes, the 30-minute plus two lap Grand Prix classes are
run. The Grand Prix is sponsored by Santich Cycles located in nearby
Pittston, Pennsylvania. Santich Cycles is a full service KTM dealer and Dave
Santich, owner and proprietor, has been sponsoring the event for a whopping
24 years.
Yamaha pilot, Nicholas Finelli topped the podium of the extremely
competitive Schoolboy class with a couple of first place finishes. Finelli
lead both moto's out of the second turn and was never challenged in the
first moto but had to work a little harder for the second moto win.
Finelli, Travis Sullivan, Tyler Wozney, Brooks Harmon and Jim Doolittle led
the start of the opening Schoolboy moto. The top five at the start of lap
two were Finelli, Wozney, Doolittle, Harmon and Sullivan. Finelli started
lap three with a three and a half second advantage on Wozney and the rest of
the top five were starting to spread out. The gap separating Wozney and
Doolittle was almost seven seconds but the gap back to Sullivan in fourth
was an even larger, 14-seconds. Wozney made a mistake in the new rhythm
section on the last lap and Doolittle took second. Finelli got the win with
10-second advantage. Doolittle, Wozney, Sullivan and Harmon completed the
top five.
Finelli, Harmon, Sullivan, Doolittle and Wozney led the start of the final
Schoolboy moto. When the leaders came down the back tree line section on lap
two, Finelli continued to lead with Wozney and Doolittle in tow. Sullivan
and Harmon were relegated to fourth and fifth, respectively. Finelli had a
three second lead on lap three. Wozney closed the gap down to a bike length
by lap four but then made another mistake and dropped back assuring Finelli
the win. Wozney, Doolittle, Harmon and Jonathan McDermott rounded out the
top five.
Finelli (1-1) took the top tier of the podium with Wozney (3-2) taking
second and Doolittle (2-3) third.
Cody Hildebrand and Drew Matterer led the start of the opening 125 C class
moto. Jerome Justofin Jr., Pat Ferris and Ryan Francis were third through
fifth. On lap two, Matterer took over the lead and Ferris moved to second.
Justin Maylath moved to third displacing Justofin to fourth. McDermott moved
up too, to fifth. Two turns before the start of lap four, Ferris took the
lead but Matterer came back to re-take the lead and hold it for the win.
Ferris, Maylath, McDermott and Doolittle competed the top five.
Justofin, Jamie Kriger, Maylath and Cel Napolitan led the start of the final
125 C moto. After the pack cleared the downhill triple the top five running
order was: Justofin, Ferris, Maylath, Matterer and Doolittle. On lap two,
Doolittle went from fifth all the way to first and then pulled away to start
lap three with a four second lead. Doolittle increased his advantage to nine
seconds at the checkers. Ferris, Justofin, Maylath and Napolitan followed.
Ferris's 2-2 rides were good enough to take the overall. Doolittle's 5-1
score earned runner-up and Maylath closed out the podium with a 3-4 tally.
